Intermediate Hurling Championship, Semi Final

Tubber 3-14  Corofin 1-10

October 7th, 2018

Tubber emerged victorious over neighbours Corofin in the North Clare hurling derby in the Semi-Final of the 2018 Clare Intermediate Hurling Championship, which was played in wind swept Sixmilebridge on Sunday, October 7th.

Despite facing into the elements in the first half, Corofin were quick off the mark straight from the throw in with Jamie Malone pointing inside the first 10 seconds of the contest. However it didn't take long for Tubber to settle in to the game, and they hit 1-4 without reply to take a firm grip on proceedings. Blaine Earley accounted for all but one point of these scores, and he would prove to be a thorn in Corofin's side throughout the game. A pointed free from Gearóid Cahill got the scoreboard moving again for Corofin, but Tubber's response was instant with midfielder Darragh O'Connor raising his sides fifth white flag. A second Cahill point followed but this was matched by another score for Blaine Earley. When a brace of Corofin points from Jamie Malone and Killian Neylon reduced the margin to four, Tubber were determined not to let their lead slide and points from Lorcan O'Grady and Ronan Monahan restored Tubber's 6 point advantage as the first half drew to a close. Half-Time score: Tubber 1-8 Corofin 0-5.

The Blaine Earley show continued in the second half as the Tubber No.15 struck for 1-1 from a penalty and a free inside the opening minutes. Corofin were forced into a re-shuffle of their team following the dismissal of corner back Donnnchadh Kelleher, but despite been at a numerical disadvantage Corofin threw everything they had at their opponents. Tubber net-minder Ronan Taaffe produced a fine save to deny Jamie Malone an almost certain goal, while a goal bound shot from Gearóid Cahill flashed inches wide of the post. Cahill did score four of the next six points, but Tubber's lead proved too much to bridge and three points in a row gave the Iarla Tannian coached side a commanding 2-14 to 0-9 lead. Cahill did pull a goal back for Corofin which was followed by a Malone point, but a third Tubber goal deep in injury time from the stick of Domhnall McMahon was a cruel blow for Corofin as the full time whistle blew just seconds later. Full-Time score: Tubber 3-14 Corofin 1-10.

As Tubber march on the the Intermediate decider against Feakle, Corofin can look back on the 2018 campaign as a year of great progress, with the team getting stronger with each game. The influx of young players from the underage set up in future years can only strengthen Corofin's panel as they strive to continue on the upward curve in 2019.
